It acts as an astringent, tonic, energizing, antipyretic, mildly diuretic, diaphoretic and detoxifying. Its fruits improve digestion, open the appetite and increase the peristalsis of the intestines. They are used for diseases of the stomach and liver, inflammation of the bile, gastritis, gastric bleeding and intestinal worms. The juice of fresh blueberries and the infusion of the plant is drunk to quench thirst in febrile conditions, pneumonia and shortness of breath. The ripe fruits have a laxative effect while the green (unripe) fruits have an antidiarrheal effect. The decoction of its leaves is taken for colds, coughs, diseases of the upper respiratory tract, as a diuretic for urinary retention, diseases of the kidneys and urethra. The infusion prepared with leaves, flowers or tops of the blackberry is used as a gargle and for washing against irritation and inflammation of the throat, pharynx, gums and oral cavity. Still the root of the raspberry is helpful against diabetes.
Its healing ability is found in its root and leaves, where its healing components are also concentrated. They contain astringents, fragarin, tannins and polypeptides. The fruits contain vitamins A, B, C and E, sugars, minerals, malic and citric acid, invert sugar, minerals (calcium, iron) and volatile oil.
Its fruits, due to their taste and aroma, are used in the production of liqueurs, syrups, jams, wine, raki and also as an additive to the aroma of vinegar. The essential oil is even added to shampoos and bath cosmetics.
