BIOLOGICAL-PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

These are due to the two main substances that Spirulina gathers, PHYCOCYANIN and SPIRULAN.

Phycocyanin is the yellowest protein in spirulina. It is a phycobililipoprotein because it contains a blue pigment, the tetrapyrrole chromophore cyanobilin, which accounts for the deep blue color of this protein. It participates in the process of photosynthesis together with the phycobililipoprotein allophycocyanin and the pigment chlorophyll.

Spirulina is a sulfated polysaccharide of high molecular weight and consists of simple sugars, derivatives of rhamnose, xylose as well as uronic acids.

 

 

ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES

The main antioxidant components are phycocyanin, spirulina, beta-carotene, and some polyphenols.

In vitro, phycocyanin has been shown to bind the highly reactive hydroxyl and peroxide radicals, as well as the reactive peroxynitrite ions. it inhibits lipid oxidation as well as selectively the activity of cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme COX-2, which is responsible for various inflammatory conditions and is overexpressed in various types of cancer.

Spirulan scavenges hydroxyl and lipid radicals as well as DMPD and ABTS free radicals.

 
 
ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΥ AIDS
Η πλέον ενδιαφέρουσα ιδιότητα της σπιροθλίνας και ιδιαίτερα της σπιρουλάνης είναι η ικανότητά της να παρεμποδίζουν την ανάπτυξη του ιού HIV-1, καθώς και άλλων ιών.
